I have been reading this thread and think that going with DBM is probably
your best bet given you availible options.
However, if you are hosting > 1000 pages, and it sounds like you are doing
some fairly serious content, etc. Perhaps it would be a good idea to move
to a service provider that can give you access to a SQL database?
Another solution that you may want to consider would be to not have the
counters run in real-time. I.e. parse your Apache logs or something every
night... giving you a report and/or a text file(s) that you can then read
and place an actual counter on the pages if need be.
