Why do you need to use stdin then? Couldn't you call the C program like
this:
<?php
$someNumber = 1234;
/path/to/cprogram $someNumber
?>
and in your C program
#include <stdio.h>
int main(char **args, int argc) {
int num = atoi(args[1]);
// some processing
printf("%d", numDerived);
}
