Custom Error Handler

Is it OK to log error information to a database inside my customized error handler, setup by calling
something like
$old_error_handler = set_error_handler("myErrorHandler");
or should I preferably only use function 'error_log' inside it?
What happens if for example my database connection generates an error inside my error handler?
