recursive multichoice menus

The phphoo tutorial (and similar items) has a nice schema for managing a
Parent/Child-Category/Subcategory database. Has anyone ever built a
recursive function to generate a multichoice menu for such a thing?
It would look something like this in a form:
<select... >
<option>Parent1: Child1
<option>Parent1: Child2
<option>Parent2: Child1
<option>Parent3: Child1
...etc.
</select>
The challenge here would be (efficiently) rendering the Parent as text
rather than its associative ID. Could someone help with a sample?
