It won't be perfect, but there is a program (wvhtml I think) that would
convert a word doc to HTML.
Other programs do HTML->postscript, and postscript to PDF is achievable
through yet another program.
Is there any reason this HAS to be done on linux? Could you not setup a
separate NT box to handle this? install the Acrobat PDF printer program,
then script Word to open the file and print to PDF, then grab the PDF file
and do what you want with it.
It's situations like this where I wish Adobe supported Linux more - you
can't get Acrobat 4 for any Unix variant apparently, and we needed it some
months ago... :(
