Not sure about others, but we get this sometimes on a particular
setup where I have the Apache process kill itself after x connections.
My theory is that my apache is dying, but the mysql side keeps
holding that open connection. The default Mysql connection
holding time is 28800 seconds I think, which is, what?, 8 hours?
Try reducing the mysql connection hold open time, and see if that
helps.
