In the default configuration, each user's session is stored in a separate
file in the /tmp directory (on Unix). The files are named:
sess_<sessionid>. I have read several posts that suggest that this will
probably give the best performance on most systems.
You can also configure PHP4 sessions to store the session data anywhere
you wanted. For a distributed site it would make sense to have the session
data on an NFS share or common database.
The section of the documentation on sessions documents this (amazing!).
There have been several messages and articles giving examples of how this
is done as well.
