Sessions using MM

I've been trying to use the 'mm' handler as my session storage module.
I've got my php.ini setup as:
session.save_handler = mm;
But it falls flat on it's face.
Has anyone used memory modules successfully at all?
Has it actually been implemented?
Also, does anyone have inputs on using
session.use_cookies set to 0?
How do you keep track of the sess_id on the clients side?
Could any of the developers please respond?
