MySQL: CREATE FUNCTION
I don't know the exact syntax (unfortunately the
online help link to this SQL statement is broken. I
would guess it's like the SQL92 standard, which you
can find in documentation for other db servers.
basically, you design a procedure that may take
arguments (like search criteria.) in that procedure
you do your insert, or your query cursor, or whatever.
then from a program (php script) you call that stored
procedure.
the benefit is that the database server doesn't have
to compile/interpret/prepare (I forget the correct
name) the statement each time you use it--it's already
done when you defined the procedure. that saves a lot
of time and energy on the part of the server.
