First, thank you all for your time.
A number of pepople have responded to my request off-list.
This the response I sent after a couple of experiments....
Ok, now the latest results, I thought you wanted to know...
time for PHP3 with script.v.1 (with substr, strlen, strpos) 1.5h, file
size 350MB
time for PHP4 with script.v.1 30m, file size 350MB
time for PHP4pl2 with script.v.2 (only explode() calls) 20m, file size
370MB
time for PHP4pl2/Zend with script .v.2 12m, file size 370MB.
I'm very satisfied with PHP4/Zend, 12m is ok.
I haven't tried the read-a-lot-at-once suggestion and I don't think I'm
going to:-)
I think I'll focus into reducing the input file size.
Thank you very much for your suggestions.
-Stathis.
PS.By the way the script I'm working on is an Apache CLF log analyzer
and is nearly finished now.
When I iron out some more performance details, I'll post it to the list.
