cookie problem

PHP does not seem to be able to retrieve cookies set by a preceeding perl
script, at least in my case. neither $cookie_name nor
HTTP_COOKIE_VARS[$cookie_name] give anything but a null string. still, my
perl scripts seem to be getting the cookies just fine. does anyone know
what is happening here? what is the work around?
