think bigger:
you SEE the picture, how do you see it? You have apparently downloaded it,
whether it's Java or a plain JPEG.
To steal it you can implement anything you like, because that picture passed
all the way through the wire to your PC.
That's my philosophy.
A screen-shot is a solution, if you can even prevent it anyhow, you can then
just take a photo of your screen or something. As long as you SEE the
picture - you are able to steal it.
Therefore - no way to do what the original poster tries to.
It is not the data in the database which you control on your server, and
your server is protected by the firewalls and passwords. That is some staff
that goes through the wire to your house. You have it - stealing in this
case is just you make sure it remains on your PC in one form or another.
That is why my idea was - not trying to hide pictures with any of this
unthinkable technologies, but simply add some copyright notice on the image
itself. A little signature in the right bottom corner would be enough, and
then whoever was planning to steal the image gets a bit disappointed and
might go to search for this kind of staff on some other sites instead -
takes less time then cleaning up the graphic.

This is not true. If you "wrap" an image in a java applet then the only way
to save it to your system would be (as someone else mentioned) to take a
screenshot of it.
Not knowing anything about Java, if there's a way to know if your applet has
focus or not, you should be able to concievably devise an applet that
scrambles the picture when it loses focus and somehow traps the print-screen
key when it has focus. Perhaps this would counter the print-screen problem
too. (But, like I said in a previous post, why do this when you can sue them
afterwards!)
