Dear Kenneth, The problem is now solved. You were close. The problem was, that I was editing the "config.inc.php3" file , and saving it with Windows line breaks. The cue came from a cross list companion Vlad Stesin (mysql@lists.mysql.com). Thanks again for your gratefull help.
