The online manual at http://www.php.net/manual/ shows which
version of PHP
each function is supported in. All the session functions say PHP4, which is
indeed correct. The table at http://www.zugeschaut-und-mitgebaut.de/php/
provides much more detail about exactly which release each function is
available in.
There is no built-in session support in PHP3. A reasonably popular, free,
library of functions to support sessions is available, called PHPLib. You
can find it at http://phplib.netuse.de/ . It does not work in
exactly the
same way as the built-in functions in PHP4, but it provides similar
functionality.
Your alternative would be to install PHP4 on your server, if it is under
your control. If it is under the control of a commodity web hosting
provider, expect them to wait some time to be sure PHP4 is stable before
they upgrade.
