Try reading the directory contents into an array, sorting it, *then*
outputting the contents of the array:
$dir = opendir(".");
$dirlist = array();
$index = 0;
while($file = readdir($dir) && $file != "." && $file != ".."){
$dirlist[$index++] = $file;
}
sort($dirlist);
foreach($dirlist as $file){
echo "$file<br>";
}
