It should at least give you a head start in the conversion. If you use
ActiveX objects and ASP-exclusive stuff then obviously it will have
problems. But it typically comments out those sections and gives a
reason why it couldn't be converted. If you know ASP, but you're not
used to PHP, then ASP2PHP may be all you need to get started.
I have "converted" sites over from ASP to PHP, and for myself it
seems to be faster to just rewrite the whole thing. Typically coding
goes by very quickly if the design already exists. It seems trying to
get the client to express what they want is the difficult part. Not
to mention when re-coding a site you may be able to optimize it better
than the first time it was written.
PHP has wonderful support (like this mailing list), so give it a try.
If you run into any dead ends, you're bound to get help within the
hour.
