Limitations to variable length?

Hi!
I want to store images in a BLOB. So I have to store the data in a
variable to give them to mysql_query().
Are there limitations to the length of string variables in PHP?
Or does someone know a better solution to insert images in BLOBs (mysql)
uploaded by a form?
