You might consider using the Sybase client library to access MS SQL from RedHat/Apache/PHP4. There
is some info on how to do this on the mssql_connect page in the annoted manual
(http://www.php.net/manual/function.mssql-connect.php)
I have done some *limited* testing and found it to work with MSSQL 6.5 sp5, and MSSQL 7.0 sp2. It
did *not* work with MSSQL 7.0 without the service packs -- which is consistent with the discussion
referenced above.
