Alex, make sure that you're not using DSO! I had a very SIMILAR problem to
yours with an older version of mod_perl. When I would compile it as a DSO,
Apache would crash with NOTHING in the error logs. When I compiled
everything statically, it worked beautifully!!

That's the funny thing - nothing in the logs. It sounds as if the web
server got started and then died. I cannot see any error messages
though on the console.
