I got the same error message, and couldn't figure out why...
In the example for pdf_findfont(), it has:
$font = pdf_findfont($pdf, "Times New Roman", "winansi", 1);
Try changing your embed parameter to 0...
$font = pdf_findfont($pdf, "Times New Roman", "winansi", 0);
... That fixed it for me. Give it a try.

I can't get pdf_findfont to work in Linux. I keep getting a message
that the font metrics are not found. It works fine in windows. Anybody
have any ides what I need to have set?
