According to GNU, it is indeed incompatible. From http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/license-list.html: "This license is used by most of PHP4, but one important part of PHP4, the Zend optimizer, uses a different and worse license: the QPL. This is a non-copyleft free software license with practical problems like those of the original BSD license, including incompatibility with the GNU GPL." 2. Yes. Just because PHP itself is licensed under the PHP License doesn't mean the code you write is automatically given the same license, just like software you code with gcc isn't automatically GPL'd (or LGPL'd?). 3. I don't know, but it may have something to do with how the Zend engine is licensed, what with it being on the commercial side of PHP and all. J
