Yup, you should be able to set it up in your .htaccess file, like so:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^article/(.*) /article.php?id=$1
I personally just starting using mod_rewrite after reading about it in this
article: http://www.alistapart.com/stories/urls/index.html
There is a performance hit for using .htaccess (the server has to read the file
for every hit), but it's an ok option if your host can't/won't put your rewrite
rules in httpd.conf.
