Hello everyone!
** This is a bit long--the questions are at the end***
I'm in the process of developing a CD-ROM application, and was wondering
if PHP can be used.
The Product
An online survey (currently online) written in PHP with MySQL backend.
The Goal
Convert this same survey to a CD-ROM application, so users can take it
without the need to visit the site.
The Question
Now, I know PHP can be used to process the data (offline), but I'm
wondering about the Interface.
Can a web browser process a (local) PHP script, without the need of a
server?
or
Can PHP be used to call Win9* user interface components?
(**I was thinking of generating VB Script codes with PHP, to support the
interface**)
My Approach (Please help)
The goal is to make it possible for the user to run everything from the
CD-ROM. I want the application to be self-contained, so the user would not
need to install anything (i.e. servers, PHP, etc.)
As far as I know, when you run PHP offline, you get the famous DOS box...
I would like to use Win98's IE intergration to provide the interface.
That is, I would write the application as if it was going to a web server,
load everything on the CD-ROM, then open it with IE
in Kiosk mode. With a combination INI files, and the CD-ROM, I can start
the application when the CD is loaded.
Here's the process I plan to use:
1)load the PHP executable onto the CD-ROM
2)load the PHP/HTML scripts onto the CD-ROM
3)Call the PHP script using the CD-ROM INI file
**Start the program as soon as the CD is loaded**
Running the Program
4)Once the CD is loaded, it will automatically open Internet Explorer in
Kiosk mode and display the application.
5)Once opened, it can operate just like a regular webpage.
6)Survey data can be save on the system or mailed to the administrator.
...And the golden questions are:
1) Unless there's a way to run the script, without the need of a server,
how do I run the script via internet explorer?
Windows will understand a line command like
...C:\program files\...\iexplorer.exe application.php
but, this opens the DOS box.
2) Will I have to load a server onto the CD-ROM? If so, can the server be
started, and used (on the CD-ROM), without interfering with the user
desktop environment?
3) How can the system registry play a part in this?
I was thinking, if I set the path to PHP in the registry, would it be
possible to run PHP scripts (via the browser) without needed a server?
I was thinking on the line of setting the browser MIME TYPES, etc.
Any suggestions?
