Try doing $HTTP_SESSION_VARS['username'] = $HTTP_POST_VARS['username'];
When register_globals is off, I don't believe that globals get stored to the
$HTTP_SESSION_VARS array when the script ends. Instead, you have to assign
them there yourself.
Side note: I don't think you need to use session_register() as well, just
create the right elements in $HTTP_SESSION_VARS instead.
