session confusion

I have a site that is using PHP 4 sessions to recognize users during a
session. When people login, I start the session and do a
session_register("userid").
The problem is that several times the site has gotten confused and thought
one user was a different user. I have session_start() in all the pages.
Is there anything I can do to prevent this mixup?
