I guess it depends on what you mean by 'a lot'. One other
way of testing this would be to remove the timer class and
benchmark the page with ab or some other benchmark program.
Way back before the timer class (!) when we first played with the
optimizer, it did in fact slow some pages down, per ab. We're
talking on the order of 5% or so, but other pages' generation and
delivery time went up anywhere from 5-30%. Never quite saw
the 40-100% mentioned on the zend site, but these
machines were pretty fast anyway - there may not have been
a great percentage to gain.
