Hey Y'all: My thought on a solution is having a web form used to sign up for the list the first time. On the form is a place to type in your question. The script would then hunt through the manual and mailing list archive and display an -- hopefully THE -- answer. If the user says that's not the answer they need, or they want to get subscribed anyway, they then get subscribed to the list.
