Are you sure this is totally a PHP problem? If looks like the system had the broken pipe issue trying to GET a .gif file. One way to test this theory is to have a benchmark program hit the server requesting a PHP page (phpinfo()?) as 300 simultaneous users and see how it holds up. Do you have enough memory in this machine?
