Writing the functions and submitting a patch would be the surefire way.

The best reference would be the ldap.c file itself in PHP. It is just a
thin layer on top of the C API, so if you know your way around that API,
picking up the PHP part of it by looking at the other LDAP functions that
have been implemented already should not be that difficult.
