Modify a session var?

I have some preferences (number of columns to display, sort on which
column, etc.) that I'd like to store in a users session.
Is it true that you can't modify a variable stored in a session? For
example when a user decides they want to have 4 columns displayed
instead of the current 3, I can unregister the cols variable, but can't
register it again with the new value. Anyone?
Is it possible to do what I want to do w/ sessions? or should I use the
db to store user prefs?
