This doesn't seem to fix the problem, the session file still has the
variable name but no value associated with it. I've searched the achieves
and seen a couple of references to similar problems and in several instances
it was said to be a bug in php 4. Can anyone confirm or deny this, I didn't
notice anything in the bug database but I didn't look very carefully. Any
other possible solutions would be greatly appreciated.

try setting the variable after the register.
<?php
session_start();
session_register("foo");
$foo++;
echo "Foo is: ".$foo;
?>
