how to build latest gd and php4?

When I installed gd 1.8.3 from src into its default location, the apache php lib build fails. i have to go back and build php4 with "--without-gd". I want the latest gd for its ability to build gif images on the fly. Interestingly enough, the PHP build works fine in either case.
