How about just pushing 8K at a time?
$bytes_sent = 0;
$chunk_size = 8192;
while ($bytes_sent < strlen($message))
{
fwrite($fp, substr($message, $bytes_sent, $chunk_size));
$bytes_sent += $chunk_size;
}
