It generally happens when you compile weird extensions into PHP or change a lot of extensions without doing a 'make clean'. It happens here if I enable IMAP-SSL - PHP compiles but segfaults Apache. So, disable any extensions then recompile and, if that works, start including the extensions and recompiling until you find the one that breaks it. And don't forget the 'make clean' every time - it adds time to compilation but it's more likely to work.
