Sorry for replying to myself but maybe we are approaching this wrong. Instead of trying to modify the behavior of var_dump() why not create a new function widget_dump()? Starting fresh might give more flexibility and be easier. Since this function will be part of PHP-GTK instead of PHP it can be tailored to PHP-GTK without worrying about how it will work in regular PHP code.
