GtkTreeView::set_model(null) not working?

Hi,
i´ve build a application with to view-modes in one gtkTreeView... a
list-mode and a detail mode. If i want initialize the treeview, i cant do
that with NULL (as described in the documentation). I need this, because i
have a button to toggle between this two modes.
Is there a way to full reset the treeview + model, so i can refill the empty
treeview from the scratch. Now i have to restart my program. :-(
