http://cvs.php.net/viewvc.cgi/php-src/scripts/php-config.in?r1=1.2&r2=1.3 Looks safe to use. Although instead of PHP, better use as variable name PHP_EXECUTABLE which is the one used on phpize.m4 for `$PHP_CONFIG --php-binary 2>/dev/null`
