Michael,
phpinfo() is not telling you what MySQL server version is installed,
but rather what version of the MySQL client libraries are being used by
PHP. If you didn't specify the path to your MySQL client libraries when
you installed PHP, the MySQL client libraries bundled with PHP were
used. You didn't overwrite 4.0.11, nor do you need to use the 4.0.11
libraries to connect to your MySQL server from PHP.
As far as safely upgrading to 4.0.11, it appears you already did.

This was buried in a previous post with a different problem, so let me
ask
this again more clearly...
I installed MySQL 4.0.11 from RPM package last week on a new server.
Apache
and PHP were not installed yet, so I downloaded source tarballs from
the
respective sites, compiled, and installed.
After installing Apache and PHP, phpinfo() says my version of MySQL is
3.23.49. How did I manage to overwrite 4.0.11? More importantly,
how can
I safely upgrade MySQL to 4.0.11?
I'm concerned that if I simply reinstall my 4.0.11 RPM, then recompile
apache & php that I will just repeat what happened the first time.
Help please?
Thanks!
