<? phpinfo() ?> shows up as a blank page

When I try to display a page that has only the line <? phpinfo() ?> in it,
I get a blank page.
I installed PHP using an RPM on a system running Red Hat Linux 7.3.
Is this is a problem. Other PHP pages display contents.
