PHP4.0.2 and RH6.2 and no libphp4.so problem

I need to install PHP4, so I downloaded the 4.0.2 tar.gz file and followed
the instructions to make a dynamic apache module, but it does not edit the
httpd.conf file or create the libphp4.so file.
This is what I did, can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong?
cd php4.0.2
./configure
I could not find apxs and I don't want mysql so i just did the above.
make install
This all works as far as I can tell, but no libphp4.so file is created and
no LoadModule php4_module libexec/libphp4.so (or similar) is added to
httpd.conf.
I've been messing with this all day. I've tried everything I can think of
and read all faqs etc I can find, but nothing helps.
