Thanks for the help so far! In message <20001003122848.E15882@ratatosk.org> you wrote: > Thus spake Daniel Barron (php@beebug.co.uk): > > > I need to install PHP4, so I downloaded the 4.0.2 tar.gz file and followed > > the instructions to make a dynamic apache module, but it does not edit the > > httpd.conf file or create the libphp4.so file. > > > > This is what I did, can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong? > > > > cd php4.0.2 > > ./configure > > If this is what you did then you didn't follow the directions. But I did! I looked at the --help options and none seems relavent, not that I understood most of them! > At the least you will want the --with-shared-apache directive > to make a shared module not using apxs. Just tried it and it said: [root@gblinux php-4.0.2]# ./configure --with-shared-apache creating cache ./config.cache configure: error: --with-shared-apache is not supported. Please refer to the documentation for using APXS > > Configure just by itself will make a standalone PHP binary that > you can use for CGI and command line scripts. > > In the stock RH 6.2 apache install, I think apxs lives in /usr/sbin. > So, then you could do --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs. Doing a cd / find -iname *apxs* only shows: ./usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/apache-1.3.11-apxs.patch ./usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/apache_1.3.12/src/support/apxs.8 ./usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/apache_1.3.12/src/support/apxs.pl I have no rpm with the word apxs in it. What rpm would the script be contained in? > > > > I could not find apxs and I don't want mysql so i just did the above. > > You don't want MySQL!?!? Heresy! ;-) Well, yes. I am talking about a single machine with no MySQL. I use it at home and work on several differnet linux servers. We use it with a web based groupware perl script I wrote which does todo, clalendar, appointments, customer database. MySQL rocks. > > > > make install > > > > This all works as far as I can tell, but no libphp4.so file is created and > > no LoadModule php4_module libexec/libphp4.so (or similar) is added to > > httpd.conf. > > You should read INSTALL in your PHP source tree. It describes the > various Apache install methods. Also, look at the output of > configure --help. That's what I did before I mailed the list. The INSTALL suggests that you don't need apxs and that a ./configure is all that is needed then a make install. Is says: If you get an error telling you that the apxs script could not be found, look for it on your system and if you find it, provide the full path to it as: --with-apxs=/path/to/apxs Notice the _if_. It also says: You now have to choose the options you would like. There are quite a few of them. To see a list, type: ./configure --help I would not like any of them thanks. Oh, hang on. Ah, I see. The language in the following paragraph is ambiguous: A popular choice is to build the Apache module version. In order to build PHP as a dynamic module for Apache-1.3.x you have to first have Apache installed. Assuming Apache is already installed, make sure the shared object module is enabled. To check this, type: httpd -l It seemed like it was talking about the whole 2a section itself. I find the whole INSTALL file quite unclear and confusing. > > > Cary Still no further I'm afraid. Should the option be: ./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs --with-shared-apache What should it be? I think it might be to do with not having the apxs script?
