A browser will only open a php file correctly if it is opened with a web server,
by putting the file in the directory where your index.html is kept, and accessed
by typing in http://127.0.0.1/phpfile.php (which looks at
the directory where
your index.html is).
I have recently discovered that some of the global variables work differently
than they used to on any PHP version that is newer than 4.1. In fact, I went and
bought a new book yesterday that writes code in the presently accepted new
format, because I kept finding the code needed to be changed. I could never get
a script with $HTTP_POST_VARS to work with the newer PHP revision.
I hope this helps,
David
