i tried this also some weeks ago (by chance php-4.0.4 just got out this day :) and also ran into
trouble. i was not able to compile php with sgi's cc without cutting down optimization and even
then i was not able to link it into apache. same situation as yours.
some nightshifts later i found following workaround: build php as a dynamic module with gcc (!),
configure apache with --enable-module=so and build it with sgi's cc (because the
255.255.255.255-referer problem). do not forget to configure apache according (LoadModule, etc...).
i also posted this as a note in the online documentation for php-installing (www.php.net).
greets
