RH Apache fails after .tar PHP4 install

OK gurus, this cannot be a new issue, but here we go.... I have a pre-installation of RH 6.2 with Apache (rpm Apache-1.3.12-2). I downloaded the PHP4 (php-4.0.3pl1) tar ball and built the files. No errors. Now, when I make the changes to the httpd.conf file, the server thinks it restarts, but it quietly dies in the background with no errors. I am suspecting that Apache is not finding the mod_php4.c file, but I don't know/cannot figure out where to put it so that it can find it. Any thoughts or suggestions before I begin the process of recompiling Apache from source?
