PHP-mysql failure

Hi:
afer setting up PHP4 + Mysql (with RH7 RPMS), I get this error with mysql_* functions:
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)
so it seems that mysqld is not running... I go to the mysql log generated in
/var/lib/mysql/nameofserver.domain.err :
