Thanks this go it to compile clean - now comes the fun of seeing what I can do with it! Just as a little reminder for anyone reading this later in the archive: I also deleted the config.cache and did ./configure and make clean and make install in all the sources that I used with php. Also did a make clean and ./configure again in apache before the final make install. It's worth doing a simple script with phpinfo() just to check you really have got everything on board in php that you think you should have.
