I guess you are trying to intall files as RPM does.
You don't have to do that. If you install everything
with default locations (i.e. /usr/local for install dir)
you will not have much problems.
Anyway, you are close to finish :)
You don't need mysql.so or anything else if you compile
module in libphp4.so.
(if you use "shared" for configure script
./configure --with-mysql=shared,/path/to/mysql
shared will compile extension as *.so files to load.
If you don't module will be included in libphp4.so)
BTW, since PHP 4.1 module has new entry structure.
You cannot use old PHP extension files. (old php_mysql.so, etc)

I am trying to upgrade Redhat 7.1's PHP from 404pl1 to the latest (4.1.1). I was going to upgrade Apache as well, but upgrading anything on Linux is a tiresome effort. RPMs don't seem to exist for this, so I am forced to use source. This wouldn't normally be a problem, except that replicating the structure of the previous install seems to be difficult. If I compile using the same options as what is specified by the phpinfo(), then it WILL make, but the server wont start; it complains about modules with odd ASCII chars not existing. If I comment out the extensions I use (imap, mysql), then these go away. Does this mean I HAVE TO compile these from source as well, even though I am using AXPS ?? Thus my install procedure becomes: get imap source !? get mysql source !? ./configure --with-imap=/imapdir --with-mysql=/mysqldir --with-axps --WithTh eRestOfMyOldOptions make make install cp /usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so /etc/httpd/lib/apache/libphp4.so (because for some reason, the install procedure doesnt do the same as the Redhat boy's seem to get it to do?) cp php.ini-dist /etc/php.ini and edit it. restart httpd ?? What I tried to do, and which worked during compilation, but just gave me a non-useable apache webserver, was: make clean && ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-config-file-path=/etc --disable-debug --ena ble-pic --enable-shared --enable-inline-optimization --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/a pxs --with-exec-dir=/usr/bin --with-regex=system --with-gettext --with-gd -- with-jpeg-dir=/usr --with-png --with-zlib --with-db2 --with-db3 --with-gdbm --enable-debugger --enable-magic-quotes --enable-safe-mode --enable-sockets --enable-sysvsem --enable-sysvshm --enable-track-vars --enable-yp --enable-f tp --enable-wddx --without-mysql --without-oracle --without-oci8 --with-xml && make && make install && echo FINISHED FINE The config line was taken from my php404 phpinfo line. httpd -t would complain it couldnt find the libphp4.so, so I moved it as I've shown above. Then it complains: PHP Warning: U???Z: Unable to initialize module Module compiled with debug=240, thread-safety=122 module API=1077465536 PHP compiled with debug=0, thread-safety=0 module API=20010901 These options need to match in Unknown on line 0 Syntax OK If I comment out "extension=mysql.so", this message goes away, but ofcourse, I cannot access mysql now. If I try and compile with imap so I can get a new imap.so, then I need to get the source for that etc; why aren't all these .so 's compiled or explained at with the PHP docs; I thought AXPS was supposed to remove dependancies between programs?
