This may help...
In my experience, if Apache loads the php module before mod_ssl then it
doesn't work (much as you describe)
So look for the line:
LoadModule php4_module libexec/libphp4.so
in httpd.conf and move it to after the SSL initializing stuff:
<IfModule mod_ssl.c>
#SSL stuff here
</IfModule>
LoadModule php4_module libexec/libphp4.so
This way Apache deals with SSL first then PHP and it then works.
