The message you get at the end of the installation program is really
highlighting the fact that because of NTFS's security features, the web
server needs to have sufficient permission to access the various php
executable and dll files. For IIS and PWS the anonymous user of the web
server, by default, accesses the machine with the permissions of a user
called IUSR_MACHINENAME, where MACHINENAME in your case will be whatever you
called your machine (eg IUSR_GLENNSNTSERVER). I'm not an apache expert, but
Apache must run as a particular user (maybe SYSTEM???) - anyway, that user
needs to have permission to access php.exe, phpts.dll and php.ini.
In practice, most NT setups seem to default to a state where the server will
have the correct permissions anyway (although I'm not sure this bodes well
for security!).
For Apache though, you also have to get your settings correct in httpd.conf,
and Julie's notes should help you there.
If there are any Apache experts out there who would care to write something
we can add to the installer which will automatically edit httpd.conf, please
get in touch, as this will take a lot of the hard work away from new users.
Cheers
