Can't get GD 1.8 to install right with PHP 4.0.3pl1

Hello, all: My inaugural question on this list -- not lightly asked, as I have worked on this for three solid days and read every source of info I could find, have even gotten down to read the PHP configure script, without much luck. All I'm trying to do is get gd to install with PHP. TrueType support looked nice so I'm trying to get FreeType included as well. Platform is LinuxPPC, kernel 2.2.15pre3, gcc 2.95.2. PHP 4.0.3pl1. Gd 1.8.3 Here's what I did: 1) Built zlib, libpng, libjpeg and libttf (FreeType). Built them as shared where possible. Built gd itself; uncommented lines in the Makefile to tell gd about all the extra libraries: CFLAGS=-O -DHAVE_JPEG -DHAVE_LIBTTF LIBS=-lm -lgd -lpng -lz -ljpeg -lttf Left the include and library directories alone. GD seemed to build fine. Why? I built GD, and told configure where to find it. In general I'm not really sure how the /ext subdirectories work. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be really grateful. I have been over every option, have tweaked makefiles, pawed through the config script, and I cannot even figure out what configure and make are trying to do here. I've built these libs a dozen times, and run configure till I'm blue in the face. I think I know what I'm doing, and I still can't make it work.
